ELIZABETH MILSOM
I am first and foremost a printmaker who has worked in many facets of the discipline since graduating with a Bachelor of Art from the V.C.A. in 1985.
Over a twenty-year period I have explored many printmaking techniques. Initially I worked as a master printer's assistant at the Bill Young Studio in Middle Park. I developed a working style that involved multiple colour plate intaglio prints. These prints involved a variety of image making techniques.
The main body of work I completed over this time was a self published, limited edition artist's book that contains 40 images accompanied by text.
This begun in 1987 when I was awarded a Visual Arts Board, project grant, and completed in 1999.
My fascination with China began in the 1980's when my mother visited the mainland. The images, objects and information she brought back have remained a source of inspiration. Through her travel I was awakened to the rich cultural history that China has in printmaking, papermaking and textiles. These are ongoing pursuits in my work as an artist.
To have the opportunity to travel to China to observe and experience these activities directly would fulfil a long-standing ambition. I believe my work would benefit from contact with both traditional practitioners and contemporary artists.
Outside my work as an artist I have been involved in my local community as a member of the committee of my children's kindergarten (5 years), and as a teacher of an activities class for people with special needs on behalf of the City of Port Phillip. Throughout this time I have given numerous community workshops and participated in many local arts related events.
